There, she meets a young man named Jesse drinking from a stream, and she's immediately attracted to him. Though Winnie loses her nerve overnight because she's afraid of being alone, she does decide to take a walk in her family's wood. She tells all of this to a toad on the other side of the fence outside her house, adding that she wants to make a difference in the world. When the reader first meets Winnie, she's deliberating about running away to escape the stifling care of her mother, father, and Granny, whom she believes pay her too much attention.
